How to Curate a Winter Capsule Wardrobe by Aiden Brooks

Winter looks are all about creating warm and cosy outfits that are glamorous, but still practical enough to protect us from the worst of the winter weather. Cold and rainy conditions from September onwards can be difficult to predict, and periods of unpleasant weather can last for days or even weeks at a time. You should focus on building a capsule wardrobe for winter, full of carefully selected pieces that are designed to tackle less than ideal winter weather while being flattering and stylish, and giving you the freedom to create a range of looks you love.

First things first, what is a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing that is designed to work in a way that allows you to create many looks from a few key pieces. The trick is to choose clothing that can be mixed and matched to give you variation, but without complicating things with too many options. For example, a capsule wardrobe should contain a few different tops and a few different bottoms, as well as a coat or two and a few pairs of shoes and boots that all look good when mixed and matched into outfits.

Making this kind of wardrobe work for winter can be a little bit of a challenge, but it is entirely possible to do with some planning, It can be the best way to make sure all your clothing is working hard to keep you warm enough and looking stylish through the cold parts of the year, and it also helps you to get the most wear out of your clothing. Quality winter clothing can be expensive so it’s always a good idea to make sure the pieces you choose can be worn interchangeably, giving you the most bang for your buck.

Choose a coat or two

Most people like to have at least one, possibly as many as two or three winter coats in their collection. It’s a good idea to have one for formal events and occasions, an everyday coat such as a shearling coat that is good for the office and your regular activities, and if you are outdoorsy then a practical, insulated and waterproof coat for hiking, walking the dog, or any other outdoor activities you take part in. Choose colours that are versatile and universally flattering with your other clothing, such as creams, beiges, navy blues, black, khaki, and other hardworking neutrals.

Jeans and trousers

Jeans are great for the winter because they are thicker and warmer than most other trousers, and they are also hardwearing and durable. You don’t need many pairs, most people like to choose two or three flattering pairs in either a skinny or straight leg fit, and in black and blue denim. Skinny jeans are great for winter wear because you can tuck your jeans into your boots rather than having to stretch the hem over the boots. Alternatively you could wear bootcut jeans with your boots, but this can mean wet hems in rainy or snowy weather. Pick up a pair of black or charcoal smart trousers for your winter wardrobe as they are perfect for occasions where denim isn’t comfortable or appropriate. Any style that flatters your body shape and makes you feel good is fine, with tapered, narrow and straight leg styles being very popular for women.

Tops

You might be tempted to buy a whole load of cosy jumpers and call it a day, but your winter capsule wardrobe needs to be a bit more versatile than that. You should aim to pick up a few quality cotton t-shirts because these can be worn under pretty much anything and are ideal for wearing indoors. Similarly, long sleeved cotton tops are a warmer addition that is perfect for layering up in cold weather. They can be worn alone or under thicker shirts for extra warmth.

For more formal occasions, pick out a couple of white or black button-up blouses. Add a few knits to your collection in neutral colours including a couple of jumpers and a cardigan that can be worn with collared blouses. If you choose quality tops in flattering cuts then you'll be amazed at how few pieces of clothing you actually need, and can minimise your wardrobe and simplify your morning routine.
